I have a request to make a clothesline cake for this week end...what's the best method to use to make fondant buttons to use as the border?
Thanks in advance CCers, Mary
I think I'd try and see how a real button imprints first because it might save time... in case it isn't practical you can use small cutters (or the other side of decorating tips) and then smooth the edges a bit and poke holes in with the end of a paintbrush.
Souunds like a cute cake. Have fun!
I made buttons by cutting out small dics with the wide end of a decorating tip. Then, I impressed the center with a dowel slightly smaller than the disc. Poked the holes with a toothpick.
Funny story -- the only dowel I had that fit the button was 3 feet long and I had no way to cut it. Unwieldy little bugger! ![]()
I've done the buttons and they are super easy. Cut a disk of fondant with a small circle cutter. WHILE the fondant is still in the cutter and flat on the table, put a dowel that is slightly smaller than the disk and press lightly, so that the fondant kind of squeezes up the sides of the cutter. Lift the cutter and gently press out the fondant disk using the dowel as pressure. Just lay your half-done button on the table, and using a small tip, like a 5 or so, poke out your two or four button holes. Ta Da! That was my method...and it worked for me so good luck! HTH!

I knew I could count on you CCers to give me some great ideas..Thanks Bunches and Bunches...anymore ideas will be highly appreciated...tomorrow is button day for me!!!
How many buttons do yall thinks will I need to make to border a 11X15 sheet cake or maybe the large oval cake pan?
I had to make buttons for a quilters group. Wish I had seen these posts about making the buttons before that!!! Really good idea on how to make the edges look right. To cut the holes, I used a tiny stir straw from my bar set. You get really clean holes and the excess just goes up the straw.
