I am so fortunate to be able to devote so time to baking cakes for other people (especially children). The lightbulb came on this morning and I thought I would get advice from all my friends here at CC. I want to make at least 1 birthday cake a month for a deserving child that might not have one on their birthday. My birthday falls just after Thanksgiving so I never had a birthday cake or party. Seems like my focus now is on children's birthday cakes and that is what I am enjoying. I would like your opinion on where to find a child each month. Anyone got ideas? I know I could go to the children's homes but there are are many I wouldn't be able to make enough of them. I'm not sure how they celebrate birthdays there. If it is once a month I could do that. I use to volunteer once a year before school started supplying backpacks for all of them filled with everything they needed to start school. There are some very sad stories there.

You could go to your local school and talk to the people at the front desk. Maybe pick a classroom and make one cake for all the children of that class. That way no one gets left out and you won't step on toes of parents who can't afford birthdays or the one who just plain forget. Good for you on this endeavor. I think it is a great idea!

I am not licensed yet so schools are out. Children's homes are probably also. Nuts! I didn't think about that!

What about a single monthly birthday cake for the children's home rather than and individual cake. That way all the kids with a birthday that month would get a really cool cake. I know it's not the same as giving an individual child a cake of their very own but these are some of the most in need kids who may very well have never had a birthday cake. You could make little picks with each of their names or something like that to recognize them individually.

Maybe check with different churches in the area. They might know. Around here we have a place called My sister's place, it is a shelter for battered women and children, you could check and see about one of those in your area. It wouldn't hurt to call and see if they could take a cake or know of someone who might. Your local library might have a suggestion on where to go. I am sure there is some place that would take a cake for a child that doesn't care if it is from your home.

My first thought was churches in your area, then I thought childrens shelter, and then I throught special ed kids that live in a group home or how about a childrens hospital wing. As long as you are not selling your cakes I don't think you would have to be licensed. Not sure what the law is in your state, you might look into it before doing anything. Your reward will be in their smiles. Good for you for being so thoughtful.

Can you imagine if a majority of us here at CC did something like this how many people we could touch.

This came up here when school started. First off, our school DOES allow homemade treats.

My child's teacher mentioned that many children never get to celebrate their birthdays at school, for many reasons. Mind you, this is a preschool class. We have a standing arrangement that she will notify me if there is a possible need for one of these children, then call the morning of, and I will bring in cupcakes for the class. These take 2 hours max, and I am a sahm/student, so I can fit it in before lunch.

If your school does not allow this, check with the local Y. You could do some small cakes for birthdays, or a large cake for the whole home.

It's good to see people who care speaking up!
