I am going to make a boat cake for my dad's birthday. I found this cake down by Jennifer1775 that seems like it wouldn't be too difficult. I sent her a PM but haven't heard back. So I was wondering if anyone could give me some advise about make the top part of the boat. I was going to make a 1/2 sheet for the base of the boat but I wasn't sure about how big to make the top part. Also do you think it would be a problem to cover it in buttercream instead of fondant?

You can just use a piece of cake to make the top part in any shape you want. You can also use rice krispies. I've done a couple of boat/ship cakes and I used rice krispies to make the bow so I could get a more curved shape. I'm sure you could do it in buttercream if you wanted to.
I have a pic in my photos of a carved boat on top of a full sheet in case you wanted to see another example...

well depending on how big you want to make the cake you could use either a sheet cake or square cake for the bottom and trim it to the shape you want. You could even bake a larger sized sheet cake and use the trimmed off portion for the top part of the boat. I would
decide 1st on your sizes and dimensions for the cake on paper. Drawing it out really helps. Then you can figure out which pans to use etc. how much cake you will be able to trim off and save for the top part etc.
I would freeze the sheet cake. Trim the cake for the bottom part.
Then with the remainder I would cut out two equal squares of cake and fill and stack them for hte top part. Then carve it into the shape you need. Stack it on top of the bottom part of the cake.
I think you could do it in buttercream, but fondant would look better IMO.
