Hi all! I made my first cake tonight...i will try to add a pic of it below...anyways...excited to make my first scratch cake and bc but i tried to free hand swirls on it and they were ok but I was wondering if there is a way to make them look more in a pattern and more pretty?

Also...please overlook how the cake looks, it was my first and the scratch swiss meringue bc i made, didnt spread nice and evenly so its not smooth at all...oh well...guess you have to start somewhere!

Look at cakes on CC with swirls on them that you like, then draw the swirls you like best on a piece of paper. Then put a piece of wax paper on the counter and practice drawing them over and over until the motion becomes natural. It may take some time to 'get it', but you can do it!

April I think your cake is very pretty, I wish my first cake was half as nice.

I'm no expert at scrolls by any means, but I believe, like in most other things cake-related, practice will make perfect. The more you do them, you'll develop muscle-memory and it will go much quicker and smoother, and you'll be able to eyeball the spacing so it looks perfect.

But great job!!!! thumbs_up.gif

Fork or spoon I wouldn't need either.... back to the scrolls you can buy pattern presses at Michaels that include scrolls. Press into BC or fondant then trace with icing. They come out perfect every time. Now back to Dane Cook.... HMMMMM don't get me started.

I have a stencil I got in one of the wilton sets. Works great everytime, just have to trace it after you make a light imprint on the cake.

I have the Wilton presses too and they are great, however I don't think there really is a right or wrong way to do a scroll. They can either be uniform or totally different. That is what makes your cake unique icon_wink.gif

I really love the look of scrolls/swirls and I was wondering how to get them more uniform looking as well. I love this place because any question I could ever have could be answered here!

Speaking of scrolls, I work at a grocery store bakery, and I have been really bored with the typical "three roses and a border" cakes, so I started throwing in a few scrolls here and there. One of the girls that works there as well, she doesn't do cakes. Well, she asked me the one day, "What are these? Are they like a secret message?" I wanted to die and didn't know how to react. I mean, they didn't look bad.

And your cake is lovely!
