I am making a three teir square wedding cake with a fondant bow on top. I want to cascade the bow down four sides of the cake. How do I make the cascading bow parts since I have to let the fondant dry before I put it on the cake, and I won't know the specific size of the cake until it is fully made?
Are you talking about the tails on the bow?
If so, just cut the tails and apply them onsite after the cake is assembled. Place the bottom of the tail first then lay it up the side of the cake. Trim excess on top, and place the bow to hide the trimmed edges.
Brilliant!
I was thinking to let them dry on the stack of pans....that's why I leave this compicated stuff to the pros. ![]()
sigh...I guess even spelling "complicated" correctly is too much for me. LOL
Thanks for the info. on how to put the tails on the cake, but i also don't know how to estimate how they will lay on the different levels. Don't I have to let them dry in the correct position for 24 hours. Also, you mentioned putting the tails on and then placing the bow on top. I thought I would put the fondant bow together on top of the cake. Is that not a good idea? If I made it before hand, how would I transfer it to the top of the cake? Do you have any pictures of this kind of thing?
I guess I don't completely understand your concern. You just touch the fondant tail to the cake at it's bottom most point and drape it up the cake and into the center of the top tier. Trim off excess. Since I wire each bow loop, I just take the individual loops in a box, well padded of course, and construct the bow on the cake.
To get the length to cut the tail you'd just add up the distance it needs to span. height of each tier + width of the ledges + length to the midpoint of the top tier. I'm generally not terribly precise, but that's how you'd compute it.
