Everyone here seems to use No-Fail Sugar Cookies; however, no sense wasting your sugar cookie dough--why not go ahead and try it, it may be delicious.

just my 2 cents...I use the wilton cookie recipe, I always seem to have issues with the no fail recipe.

As for the original question...I use pre-made cookie dough when I am making cookies for the kids to decorate, not that scratch tastes better, but I need something quick to whip up so they have something to do while I am decorating!

I don't see why not. Sometimes I use the bagged cookie mix that you just add eggs & water to. I don't always want to make a whole cookie mix so that a nice shortcut for me. Go for it!

kelketchum,
There's a great tutorial on the articles page of this website called "How to bake & decorate cookies". It was written by Antonia74, who makes absolutely stunning cookies, and has the recipe for the no fail cookies as well as the royal icing she uses to decorate. She also gives details on her method of decorating cookies.

Even if you're planning to use buttercream, it might be helpful to read through the first part of her tutorial about the actual cookies. Sometime when you have some time to experiment, you may want to try her icing recipe as well. I've been using it for about a year now, and everybody loves the appearance and the taste of the cookies!

Good luck!
Laura.

before I found the "No-fail recipe" (and the Martha Stewart recipe before that), I often used a "doctored" packaged sugar cookie mix. You need to add some more flour (probably at least 1/2 cup) and I always added some additional flavorings. Everyone loved the taste of them. But they do spread a bit.
