I have a bride who's colors are white and black. The cake she wants incorporates the edible pearls.

Is there a black lustre dust or another way to get the pearls black??

Thanks!

I agree, I would use the black fondant, then depending on the shine you want you could use either Pearl Dust or black luster dust.

I would try using the soft black licorice - you can roll it into balls, roll it out flat, mould it into shapes...very versatile !!! ( & no mess !! )

i wouldnt use pearl dust on black,it wont stay black. i myself have never seen black luster dust, but i am almost positive there's got to be some.

definately start with a black pearl though...i'd color chocolate fondant black or satin ice sells pre colored black. www.intotheoven.com

I can't find black luster dust anywhere, but I found websites that said to use it so it must be somewhere.

I have heard of people mixing pearl dust with petal dust so you might be able to mix Charcoal Black petal dust with a Super Pearl luster dust to get a shimmery effect... I haven't tried it but it might be worth a shot.

I use Earlene's directions to make pearls (instead of buying the molds which are costly plus you have to wait for them to arrive).

http://www.earlenescakes.com/prlinstruct.htm

Here is the link, plus you can make whatever size you want with things you probably have on hand. I'm making some now for a cake next month and by using the large round tip, they are all coming out uniform in shape. Plus it gives me something to do when I'm watching food network!

I would also use the black fondant and once they dry for a day, just a touch of pearlescent powder on a couple, just to see how they come out. I bet it will look nice, but don't overdo it on the pearl dust.

Actually black pearls are more of a dark charcoal gray color rather than black. Also good ones are iridescent and lustrous. I'm not sure how that would fit with the black and white theme. If you have other black decorations on the cake, black pearls aren't going to work. If the only black is the pearls, it would be very pretty.

Ooooh, I have an idea! I've mixed black gel paste (wilton) w/ nu silver luster dust and it reminded me of gun metal, which to me, looks like the black pearls (I love them!).

Anyway, my pics aren't all that great but hopefully you can tell that the glasses on my worm really did look like that (I need a lesson in photography icon_rolleyes.gif )

When is this cake for? I'd love to see the final outcome thumbs_up.gif

I guess this is cheating, but I just ordered the regular pearls. To make them black I thinned a little wilton paste in a small glass bowl and then poured the pearls into the bowl. I put cling wrap over the top and shook them. Then I poured them out on a nonstick surface to dry. They were shiny and beautiful!

Thanks everyone, so much!!

We have the regular pearls here at the cake supply, so I'm going to try both ways. I'll need the black fondant anyway, so I'm ordering that this week.

I'll try to post pics of the pearls both ways--with black fondant and with the already made pearls painted with black gel and lustre dust. That way we can see a comparison!! icon_smile.gif

Oh, and the cake is for a wedding the 3rd weekend of Oct. I think it's the 22nd.

Thanks again!!! thumbs_up.gif
