Tips For A Wooden Bucket Cake

I have never done one before. I am doing a wood bucket filled with leaves and acorns. I would like it to be wider at the top. Do people carve the layers to taper or do you bake, for instance, a 8" and 9", with the 9" on top? Am I making sense with this?

if you have them i would do a 7, 8, and 9 then carve like the whimsy cakes are done.
