My Cake Won't Bake Evenly And Flat
Decorating By LarissaEmily Updated 10 Sep 2007 , 3:36pm by LarissaEmily
how do you make your cake bake evenly, so that a 2" round will actually be 2" on both sides and not 2" on one side and 1" on the other. All of my cakes bake lopsided with one side lower than the other.... what am i doing wrong?????
thanks for any advice.

I don't think your doing anything wrong. Usually if its mound in the middle you can use a rose nail or baking strips. Sounds like you might need to check your oven. Most ovens have adjustable feet so that you can make sure its level, if not you can use shims to adjust. You should also check your racks to make sure they're level.
First you should check and make sure that your oven is sitting level. Other than that I would recommend the Wilton (or other brand) Bake Even Strips. You soak them in water and wrap them around the pan so that the whole cake bakes more evenly. Another trick I have heard of (but not yet used) is to put a flowe nail upside down in the center of the pan. It acts as a heating core. Good luck!
Most ovens have "hot spots" so it is helpful if you rotate your cake pans halfway around at least once during baking. I usually turn it twice.
If you're getting cakes that much out of level, you oven isn't level. Fill a glass measuring cup to the halfway point and set it on your cooled oven rack. Is the water line level? If not, then get down on the floor (this is where having a hubby is handy) to find those oven feet and adjust them.
Thank you thank you for everyone's advice!
