OK, I have come to the conclusion that if I want a FABULOUS cake for my B-day then I'm just gonna have to do it myself (or get a stop & shop one from DH) icon_lol.gif

So I was thinking, since I want to make up a couple dummy cakes for my portfolio this would be the perfect opportunity. (since I don't really need anymore cake then I already consume when I am baking anyway)

I would like it to be 2 tiered and round, but other then that, I got nuttin'! LOL

If you don't mind, I'd like you to post YOUR favorite tiered cake that you made so I can get some ideas.

well, being that I've only made enough tiered cakes to count on one hand.....I don't have many to choose from......my favorite design wise would have to be this one........I just love the geometric shapes and the contrast between the pastel and black colors!

Oh, I love that one KHalstead, but I don't understand how to do a topsy turvy. How is the top tier stable? Did you have a lot of scraps? What did you do with them? If I made this from real cake, could it be transported in one piece? Thanks for posting!

Anyone else?

they are super stable...this cake travelled with Non cake people (you know how they handle cakes lol) and went to three different locations with three different people transporting and driving it and arrived in the same condition as in this pic. There are NO cake scraps.......you cut diagonally through one layer of the cake from the top edge diagonally down to the opposite side on the bottom and then you flip one half over and it makes the cake super slanted.......but you don't waste any cake. I sunk the top tier down a bit into the second tier and then put a central dowel through the entire thing.....it didn't budge a bit and actually was the first tiered cake I've EVER made.....well besides a mini one but that doesn't count lol

Louise, a member here on CC, has posted an excellent whimsy cake tutorial on her website, if you are interested. Have a look:

She has other amazing tutorials as well.

My favorite two layer cake to date would be the one with I made with lillies. I love flowers on cakes. I have others, but this small one is my favorite that could be used as a BD cake.

KHalstead -now I get it!! I saw the tutorial on here for topsy turvys and it just looked like there was so much waste and I haven't figured out cake balls yet so I have been putting the TT off.

SugarFrosted - Thanks for the link! I think I might have to bake a cake tomorrow just to try it out. icon_wink.gif

inspireddecorator - your cake is so sweet! Thanks for posting it.

the topsy turvy cake tutorial on cc is muuuuchh easier than the one posted. Its a bit more stable because its only the illusion of instablity. There is little to no waste. there's a thread on the cake ideas index asking about topsy turvy cakes, you should check that out icon_smile.gif
