I've always used Wilton's Fondant but decided to give the MMF a try. I used the recipe off of CC but it didn't work out for me. It was really dry and I couldn't get it to except coloring. I tried adding more water but that made it fall apart. I may have added it to late. And the coloring just never happened. Any ideas?

Not sure what happend. Which recipe did you use? I like the alternative mmf recipe myself. The crisco makes it much more plyable. I have used 3 different ones.

You may have added too much sugar though. I never use the called for amount. Just add until it is the right consistancy.

You can try adding crisco to it and see if it works. Others may have better info for you.

Also it may have not taken the coloring because it was too dry to knead it in.

I never use all the sugar the recipe calls for. Also, I add the color with the water or I add color after I have softened it by kneeding or zapping it in the microwave for a few seconds.

Hope this helps - keep trying it is worth it.

With mmf, don't use all the ps, not everyone needs it. I add about a 1/4 cup shortening to mine to keep it moist and pliable. Also, add your coloring to the melted marshmallows or you will have to kneed it forever to get it to color right. I make 1/2 batches, they work really well. Also, if I have some that I need to color, I soften it in the microwave until too soft to roll, then add the color. It makes it easier.

I've never had trouble withe recipe from this site but I have only used it for decorations and have not covered a cake with it yet. I usually knead my colors in as I usually have multiple colors. For a large batch of the same color I would definitely add it to the water mixture first.

patticakesnc, what is the alternative MMF recipe???

Wow, great tips you guys give here. I also have the problems with it being to dry and craking when using. The only way for me to use it with out cracking is when it is still warm just after making it. I will try all what you said, great tips.
By the way coloring what I do is cut the dough in half and mix the color by hand. Also adding some water will make it fall appart but if you keep kneading it will get back together. Thanks for asking!!

Here is the link to the alternative mmf. It is pretty much the same but it has crisco added. I was kind of scared of a greasiness but I used it on the birthday cake in my photos (red white and black cake) and it was wonderful! It was perfect for covering the cake.
