I decided to try BC with Walmart shortening b/c of the problems with Crisco and the recommendations on here. I noticed as i was scooping it that it was very soft, for lack of a better word. Softer than Crisco. Is this the normal consistency? I used 1/2 the normal amount of water in my BC because it seemed thinner than usual. I iced a cake three hours ago and IT WILL NOT CRUST. icon_cry.gif I made sure it was the shortening that has trans fats in it. Any thoughts? I have my cake sitting in front of the window AC and dehumdifier right now, after the fridge didn't work.

Is it all vegetable shortening? I bought a store brand once (Don't remember which one...) and I apparently didn't check to make sure it was all vegetable shortening. It wouldn't crust at all and I went back and looked at the label and it said "contains meat solids" whatever the heck that means! Eew! Maybe there is animal fat preventing the crusting and keeping it softer?

I agree that the Walmart shortening definetly has a different consistency, and I had an issues with it being more "whippy" than Crisco BC and had more bubbles....but my BC made with it crusted just fine. I have no clue why it wouldn't crust especially if it still had the transfats in it. Sorry, nver had that issue with it, but hopefully this will bump you back up so someone else can help.

Cake will not crust in the fridge. The condesation will prevent it from doing so.

I use the walmart Vegetable shortening and and have never had a problem. I do adjust my liquids because it is softer than Crisoe

(PS I sent a mad note to them about the Trans Fat change grrrrr) miss my origional.

Also it may take a little longer to crust than most.

Good luck

Phew! Partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil with mono- and diglycerides.

Doesn't that just sound yummy?? But at least no lard!!

Well I'm glad to know it's not just me and Walmart shortening is softer than Crisco. It did seem more "whipppy"!

pinkbox, i used to be able to put the old Crisco BC in the fridge and get it to crust. I think my fridge has less humidity than the air here
lol... At least the humidity is down to 63% since I turned the AC on. And after 2 hrs in front of the AC, it finally crusted!

Thx for your help! icon_smile.gif
