My DH's birthday is on Monday, and he wants me to make a cake that looks just like his fire helmet. I've seen several of the fire helmet photos on here, and was wondering how best to get the basic shape? His helmet is also very dirty (which he is soooo proud of), and wants the cake to look the same. Help!

I've attached a picture of his helmet "style".

Thanks in advance!

Can't see the pic.

For shaping, you can try baking it in a pyrex bowl, then shaping that down, and having a 10 or 12" round as the bottom layer, which will help you with the rim. Make long rolls (the same as playdoh snakes we all made as kids) to use as the long bumps on the helmet. Then cover the whole thing in fondant.

What color is his helmet? If it's yellow/green I would suggest airbrushing (or dusting, if you don't have an AB) with brown. If it's red, a little black would work for dirt. If it's black, then does it really need to be dirty?

I can't see the picture but I came across this tutorial, maybe it can help you with some of the basic construction.

I'm not sure why the picture didn't attach, but the tuturial did help. His helmet is black, and has lots of decals on it. Would brushing cocoa powder over it help with the dirty look? He also has the flip down eye shields, and not quite sure how to make those.
Thanks for all the help so far!

what if you use powdered sugar in a dusting bag to look like soot?

you could use a piece of mylar for the face shield and use fondant or gumpaste as the rim for it.
That way it would hold it's shape.

When you finish the cake, take his helmet and put frosting all over it so that his helmet looks exactly like the cake! LOL!
