OK my son is turning 2 and my friend is making his cake (she used to work in a bakery so im sure she will understand any lingo that i do not)
this site has already been so helpful!

ok here are my silly questions:
1. I would like a 3 tier topsy-turvy Disney "Cars" cake that will feed 40-50 people.
(the top tier will be his smash cake)
how many cakes will she need to bake and what size pans will she need to do this?

2. I want one layer chocolate, and one layer vanilla and not sure about the other layer, however i read that you need a sturdy cake for carving and could add pudding or sour cream to box-mix...do you have any suggestions for this?

3. on the top i would like to do the winners circle and was wondering what do you recommend she use to simulate fireworks? the glitter dust on some sort of gumpaste figure? im having such a hard time trying to put my ideas into words....any help would be appreciated! TIA! icon_smile.gif

well lets see if you want to exactly feed 50 people that would be hard to do with 3 tiers ....you could however do a 2 tiered 10" and a 6" with no problems and then make a seperate smash cake to boot...

I guess you could do a 10" 8" and then the 6" smash cake for the top...but then there wouldn't be much room for the road that goes to the top...unless you didn't care for that...

a 10" has 38 party size servings
a 6" has 12 " " "
so there is 50 servings

a 8 " would add an additional 24 servings and that is quite a lot of additional servings unless you just don't care.

She can simulate the fireworks in royal icing and wires...or fondant stars and rockets attached to wires..just make sure she uses the right gauge or it won't stand up right.

Your questions arent silly!
1. I would do a 10, 8 and 6 inch

I find a 10 inch will feed 24-30, 8 inch 15-20. So that will give you the 50 or so servings and the smash cake obviously will be for the baby.

2. There are some recipes on this site for cakes that will hold up to carving. I want to say durable cake recipe? I havent tried that one.
I use this recipe for almost all of my cakes, including carved:

1 box mix any flavor with all of the ingredients called for on the box.
Add: 1 cup ap flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 oil or softened butter (I use butter)
2/3 water or milk (I use whole milk)
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp of extract (I usually use vanilla, almond) optional

makes a thick batter that usually takes a little longer to bake (usually 10-15 longer)

If it is white cake I use whole eggs instead of just whites*

3. Maybe ou could do fireworks with wire? Pipe some royal icing on them and stick them in the cake?
