I am starting this because there is a very interesting thread http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopicp-5140483-.html#5140483 about using regular printer ink instead of edible ink and Crayola non-toxic markers instead of the really expensive food markers. I am very interested to hear what everybody thinks.

Are food colorings merely non-toxic ink? Like the chalk powders? thanks icon_smile.gif

There is a big difference from non toxic and edible or food safe.

Non toxic means it shouldn't make you sick if you ingest it, but it doesn't mean you that you really should ingest it alot of it.

I was looking for food writers at my local cake shop and she recommended using a sharpie. "It says its non toxic" she says. "We use them all the time!" she says. Ok. I just wanted to draw some lines on some little fondant/gumpaste basketballs. I gave it a shot, but the whole time I'm thinking, "yeah, these really smell bad!" Which I knew, but....anyhow. I'll be telling people not to eat the basketballs. They probably won't be any good anyway b/c they've been made for a month now. They're like rocks. But you know how kids are. They'll eat anything with sugar in in.
