I was going to make a cake with basketweaving, but I can't remember how to divide the cake. I remember how to divide for an oval cake, but I'm not sure how for a round cake. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I never divide it...too much work. I just wing it and if it doesn't match up very well at the end - I make that the back of my cake! But really, I think mine have always been just fine without dividing the cake.

I was taught that you divide your cake the width of the small spatula...the blade is about 3/4" wide...just mark it with the side. When you are nearing the end of it, you can slightly adjust the width if needed.
The small spatula is good in that you can use it to mark the lines all the way down your cake as they are usually not taller than 4"...
I believe they have instructions on the wilton site too...

I never divide either. Just go for it. Yes, sometimes it will come out uneven but put that in the back.

I'm a non-divider too-- it always just seems to work out. (In fact, if I had to divide it out, I would probably never do basketweave!) -- But anyway, every now and then I have to fudge it a little at the end but its never noticable. Good luck!

I quarter a round cake with the spatula and make marks. If your using tip #48, try marking the vertical lines using the tip as a guide between your quarter marks. Hope your not just totally confused! icon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

I didn't divide on the Course 2 cake in my gallery. In fact if you look the basketweave ends in the front so you can see how well it sort of matches up. I was taught to measure/mark using the width of the piping tip. I was pretty happy with it. Now if only I can remember to put the starting/ending points on the back of the cake.

Buy one of the show n serve cake boards and use the indentations as a guide for your basketweave. I got that tip from a video.

I never divide either - usually matches up pretty well.

In my course 2 my instructor told us that we could use one of the small cake formers and press it against the cake to mark it evenly.

I'm self taught and I knew nothing about dividing! I just went for it and my basketweave came out okay. Others thought it was good.
