...so I had my three tier western/cowboy themed cake all frosted, covered in fondant which I made and marbeled the day before, the whole thing was done and ready for finishing touches (fondant barbed wire, fence posts, hay, etc) It was on a cake board which was on a cheap turn table. The turn table sits a couple inches high...I call it 'cheap' cuz it breaking is what caused my cake to hit the floor, completely upside down.
When it broke, one side of it lowered, letting the cake board slide off and onto the floor. I tried to grab it, but no dice, the thing was heavy and once she started goin', she was gone.
I called my husband to come in and look at it. We laughed. The dogs were eye-ballin' it. Since it fell completely upside down, the fondant was the only thing to actually touch the floor. I scooped the cake out of my now, fondant bowls, and made cake balls. I then had to go the local grocery and buy a cake.
Thank God the girl it was for is a really good friend. I had made chocolate horseshoes and cowboy boots, painted them with luster dusts and was able to use them on the store-bought cake. I told my story at the shower. They were all kinda happy it happened in a way cuz the cake balls were so good. Geez, whatta day!!!!
Guess I was due....I'd never had anything like this happen before and I've been at this decorating stuff for a few years now.

I am sooooooo sorry, but it sounds like you might have opened a whole new product to sell! I hope you took advantage of this and made you DH go out and buy you a new turntable so you would "feel" better!

Awww you poor thing icon_sad.gif I'm sorry this happened to you. I'll help by telling you my first disaster lol.

I was trying to find an easy way to level a 1/4 sheet cake and I goofed by running out of cake boards and not having another way to flip it. So I go ahead and flip it out onto a cake board, trim the top off, go to flip it onto another cake board it wasn't level so I flipped back and tried again. The next time I went to flip it was crooked so I layed my hand on it thinking ok I can hold it in place and twist it a little bit and make it right...nope wasn't happening I don't know what possessed me to do it but I went to flip it into my hand and change boards, the one was bent and was causing it to not sit right... well it crumbled obviously the stupidest thing I've done lol.

I had cake all over me, my arms, my legs, the table, the floor and a big chunk remained on the board, so I cut it into plate sized pieces plated it and left it for the kids, cleaned the rest up and called the hubby. Told him what happened he laughed I cried and cursed him lol. He stopped at the market and bought two cake mixes and came home and helped me rush to make another cake in time for the next day's noon delivery lol.

Needless to say we were up until 3 am frosting this cake and we were 30 minutes late for the party lol. But being it was family they were alright, I didn't tell the story until the party was over and everyone raved about how good the cake was lol.

At that time I didn't know anything about cake balls or I would've turned it into a good thing lol.

Now I have tons of cake boards on hand at all times because the stupid cookie sheet trick just doesn't work for me lol.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I bet you wanted to pull your hair out, jump and down and scream and then cry.

Knock on wood - I've yet to have my first cake disaster for a cake that I'm selling. I probably just jinxed myself - LOL!

...lol...OhMyGoodies, thats a great 'disaster' story.
And yes, I went out and bought myself a brand new, THICK wood turn table. Its more like a cherry wood lazy susan.
I just pray it never happens again!

This is just scatring me. Making my first wedding cake and already added something to this thread. I feel so bad, but glad everything worked out in the end. I already printed out the recipe for cake balls just in case.

Wendoger- I was born in Enumclaw and we moved to Oregon when I was five. Most of my family still lives in the out lying areas. I think is neat when you meet people from where you were from. icon_cool.gif

pinknlee....
The web can be a small world! I grew up on the outskirts of Bonney Lake, moved here to Enumclaw when I got married a little over 2 years ago. I love living here. I have always been into horses and Enumclaw is such a horsey town!
