Welcome Judy!
Paste/gel colors are what I use - Wilton and Country Kitchen are the only ones where I'm at. They tend to work better than liquids (makes the icing more runny - thus have to add more powdered sugar). I know there are powders out there that are suppose to work well, too. Black and red tend to be the ones that use the most to get the desired color for me. Pink is one that you just need a TAD of - I use the Rose color and love it!
I'm sure you will get plenty of responses to this - I'm anxious to see what else is out there too!!
Best of luck on your cakes!!!!

The best colours are the paste kind. Keep in mind that red takes a ton of dye to make and can taste very bitter. If you make black it's best to start with chocolate icing! Also, lots of dye can cause changes in colour of you natural bodily functions!

Michaels also has a large selection of cake decorating items.

hiya and welcome!

personally i use the sugarflair paste colouring. i dont like the liquid colurs as they mess up the consistancy of things but the paste seems a lot better.

hope this helps. im in the uk so im not sure if you can get this worldwide!

Hi ontariomom...I'm in ontario too
Bulk barn has most of everything you need... just be sure you get the colors for coloring icing... they also stock the colors for making candy which is different... and the paste rather than the liquid as the others say.

Welcome to CC! I like using Wilton and Americolor colorings. Americolor is good esp. if you want to the colors to be bright and bold , Wilton's tend to be more on the muted side. You can find Americolor right here in the CC shop.

HTH (Hope that helps)
