Okay, so someone asked me to make a turkey cake/centerpiece for Thanksgiving... live-looking turkey, not stuffed and in a pan turkey. I've searched this site and seen some cute ones, but not really any with the head I had in mind. The body will be the 1/2 sports ball pan cake and the tail feathers a variety of colors of fondant feathers dried and sticking up.
But how do I make a decent looking head? Turkey heads are not easy! lol... They don't have a preference whether the head is made of cake or even edible. Will it be too heavy to attach to the cake if I just mold it from fondant? Or does someone have a suggestion for how to make cake into a turkey head?
How do I do that? Mold rice krispies treats into a turkey head shape then cover with icing/ fondant? (I know, how can I be a caker without being an "Ace of Cakes" watcher? I'll have to get on that! lol)
LOL!!!
Yeap, that's how you do it!!! He did a dinosaur cake like that!!! I'm not a professional or anything, but when he did it, it seemed easier than trying to mold fondant into a certain shape (too heavy)!!! And so the RCT wouldn't be so bumpy, I think he rolled it out with a rolling pin first to flatten it!! (well, that's what he did on the skyscrape challenge!!) HTH

check out this debbie brown dinosaur cake. it is just fondant. if you do rice crispies, it would need a solid support structure through the body to hold it up. Duff used copper pipes sautered together to do the dinosaur cake. i dont think most of use have those types of tools laying around. the size you mentioned would be absolutely comparable to this db dino cake, and so i think it would work to just transform it into a turkey head, gobble gobble! pm me if you need instructions, i have the book.
if you wanted a slight cartoonish look, you could even do the legs/feet the same way as with this dinosaur, just turkey legs sticking out like he just plopped himself down to ponder ...a funny stunned look on his face...maybe he realizes that he has been invited to dinner!
Lol.... thanks, that dinosaur is perfect. Almost looks like a turkey already!
I just watched a demo at my local cake club meeting for a turkey cake. The lady made the turkey's head out of a ball of fondant. ( brown)The neck was a long log of fondant with one end's edges pinched out all the way around it to make a ruffled look. She stuck a long skewer into the log that was long enough to stick into the body on one end and the head on the other end. She made round balls for the eyes(white) and pressed them sort of flat onto the front of the head. Made a triangle shape( orange) for the beak and scored it on both sides as if it were slightly open looking and stuck it so the pointed end was outward on the face. Rolled another log of fondant ( red) with both ends slightly flattened and rounded for the waddle which was layed on top of the beak just below the eyes. It was really cute and could be made very whimsical or more realistic too.
Hope that helps!
