Hey! I just recieved my first wedding cake order.. Mind you.. I dont have a license or a bakery.. SOOOOOOOOO.. I feel that I cannot charge bakery price.. Heres a question to all the At Home Bakers... I need to make a wedding cake (round) to feed 150 people.. I dont want to charge by the slice.. I want to charge by the cake.. Remember this is family.. if that matters and I'm planning on doing 14, 10, and 6.. will this feed 150 people? She wants it to be SIMPLE.. (which is the hardest ever) smooth finish (buttercream) with a rope border.. She is going to add flowers to it at the reception.. (p.s. ssshhh...
I've never done rope border, any help would be HIGHLY appreciated!!!)
Ok.. how much would ya'll charge??? HELP!!!! ![]()

A round 14", 12", 10", and 8" with a 6" anniversary cake on top serves 182 according to Wilton. I would say that's really about 150. Good luck!!
I think you will catch on to the rope border with no problems....I really like doing it...and there is a lot that I cant do! Good luck on your first wedding cake.....that is exciting! I have never done a wedding cake, but I will suggest that you try the Melvira smoothing method if you have not already tried it....it works great (I use the roller over parchment paper since paint rollers are not intended to be used on food--and it still works great). Good luck!
I would say $300 atleast. You will not find a lot of places that will do a wedding cake for less than $2 a slice. i know it's hard when it is family though. You could make part of it as a wedding gift from you, say knock off $50 or so. i have done that before.
ok, I am in the same boat as you (unliscened ect..)So this is what I would do for family:
With the tiers that you are planning, I would charge $150-unfilled $200-Filled.
Now, according to the Wilton chart, I don't think the tiers you have will be enough, especially if the bride wants an anniversary cake. (I have that a 14, 10 and 6 will feed 128 and that is with their small slices.)
My suggestion would be to do as aligotmatt suggested and do a 14-12-10-8-6
Then I would change my prices to 200 unfilled 250 filled.
(by unfilled I mean bc only, no special fillings)

Ok one more post.....about the price....when I got married 4 1/2 years ago...I went with a home baker who wasn't licensed and all that and she charged me $350 for the cake I am attaching below (the florist did the flowers so that was extra)....at any rate, I thought I got a great deal (after doing some shopping around) and I want to say that I told her for 150 -175 people.....
