I Am New And Need Advice On Starting Out...
Decorating By Nataliesmom Updated 7 Nov 2006 , 5:26am by playingwithsugar
I am very new to cake decorating (I have done two in the last week!
), and I am mainly learning because I want to be able to decorate cakes for pleasure and for my 5 month old daughter's first birthday. Does anyone have any suggestions on necessary supplies for a starter or any ideas on the best classes to take? I love the three tiered fondant cakes and would love to wow everyone at her first birthday party with a knock out cake. Thanks for all your help!! Any advice is appreciated!
Hi! I'm a newbie too and I'm currently taking Wilton cake decorating classes. They're usually at your local craft store, cost about $25 plus a kit which is usually about $20 and there is always a promotion going on. This month, it was 50% off the class and I had a $5 off coupon so the class was $7.50! Definitely worth it. You learn a lot of basics to get you started and trust me after the first few classes, you'll be hooked! \\
Good luck! ![]()
I agree with Jessieb It will give you alot of good basics. Also use this site. You will learn so much here. You will be so glad you found it. It is the best. Welcome aboard. Happy decorating and congrats on the new addition.
This site is a great avenue. Also, your local craft store for classes, especially Michaels. I just got a flyer last week which had some 50% off coupons for any one item so you could get the Course 1 kit or any decorating kit for 1/2 off. The only other thing I could suggest is practice, practice, practice. Welcome and good luck.

I'm also getting started and honestly, I've just read and read and read. This site is a HUGE help. People here are so nice and I've learned so much. Plus I've gotten the Wilton Yearbooks and you can learn so much about cakes and their products in those. That's where I started and it's helped so much!
Thanks everybody!!! Today was my birthday and my wonderful husband bought me the cake classes at Michaels and a professional decorating kit! I am so excited. I am leaving here in about thirty minutes to head there. Hope all goes well and that I learn alot!! ![]()

if today is your birthday you need to go back into your profile or on June 11 you're going to get birthday wishes that you are not going to know where they came from..lol
Happy Birthday! How nice of your husband to get you something like that. Nice gift huh?
I'm sure you will have fun at your classes. No matter what don't give up even if you hit an area that seems hard. Practice makes perfect!
Sounds like you are on your way to the WOW cake you are hoping for. I'm sure by the time it is your little one's birthday you will be doing cakes like you can't believe.

Thanks for letting me know about the the birthday! I guess I should have read the info better!
The class went great and it was alot of fun. I can't wait until we get to decorate a cake next week!
My sister also called tonight and asked me to make the cake for my 4 year old nephew's birthday next week so I will actually get to play around with some really cool ideas.
Thanks so much to everyone who responded! I am already addicted to this website and have learned so much!
