Just wondering if it is possible to flavor royal icing with vanilla or mint or orange flavor? Would that be gross? I thought of it because I saw a recipe for those butter mints. And I started thinking about how royal icing has all that confectioners sugar (like the buttermints, except no butter of course) which results in a sickeningly sweet flavor. If I make all my cake flowers out of royal icing, as I'm considering to do in the future, then they will look pretty but taste gross.

I guess if this has been done before, I would have already seen a recipe for it. But stupid questions sometimes are not so stupid!

You can def flavor ri BUT you have to make sure you take out the amount of water based on the amount of flavoring you add or your ri is waaaay too thin!

absolutely!!! Vanilla will boost the sweetness, but surely adds a nice flavor. I love the taste of my royal icing where I sub 1 Tbsp lemon juice for 1 Tbsp water. It cuts the sweetness way down and makes a nice contrast on my sugar cookies. Orange would be really yummy, too I think.

Thanks guys! That was super helpful. I feel inspired to try something along these lines. I'll have to update when I do. I'm starting Wilton course II in just a few days. Royal icing and I will become good friends so this is good to know!
