I saw other posts for this, but I've never done it so I want to make sure I can do it... lol. I'm making a three-tier circle cake, the botton is 14X2 I think.... I dont know the other sizes either.... anyways, I think I need something in there to support it. Can I use my wooden skewers I use for cookie bouquets? Or do I need a big dowel?
I've never made a cake this big, its for my best friend and I want her to have the best cake I can make.... I dont want it collapsing! And this is box cake mix, thats okay right????

Proper construction is essential for any tiered cake. You want to use food safe wooden dowels. The easiest place to find them is the cake section at micheals or wal-mart. Cut the dowels to the height of the cake not the icing. I like to measure and cut mine once I get the crumb coat on. I also use a miter box and small hacksaw to cut them. Made life so much easier! Don't use skewers or the paper lollipop sticks(those esp will get soft and collapse)
Using a box mix is fine. I like to add an extra egg and a box of instant pudding mix as it helps make the cake just a bit denser, which holds up better to stacked construction.
I recommend stacking on site since this is your first tiered cake.
Sprinkle some powdered sugar in the area where the tier above will sit and this will prevent the icing from sticking when the tiers are removed for serving.
How many people do you need to serve? That will help you determine what size cakes to make!
