kathi- how long its good for is up to you.
I wouldnt do it for more than 6 months
you will want to start a book (like those $1 composition books that little kids use) and keep a record of gift certificates you write out.
It definitely needs your name- or the name of your shop- the dollar amount- ur signature for authenticity- as well as a record # (you write this record # in your little book along with the date of issue- the amount it was for and the expiration date and who it was issued to)
you will also want to have a date of issue- the expiration date
how it looks is up to you.
I have seen certs that are a full page on nice pretty paper and then have seen others that are the size of a standard business envelope and rather plain.
If you have any type of computer graphics knowledge you can always make it in photoshop and in that case just do a full 8.5x11" to make it easier for yourself and it gives you more creative room
at least thats what I do when we sell gift certs for my mom and I's art studio.
I made some gift certificates with a template that I found on the Microsoft website. They are pretty plain, but served their purpose.
Make sure to check your state's laws regarding gift certificates. I believe that Ohio passed a law where they have to be good for 3 years, etc.
If it's for a cake I'd put something on there saying "must give one weeks notice" or two weeks depending on how busy you are.
I agree that you should check into your state laws. Here in CA, with another business I've been doing, I'm not allowed to let a gift certificate expire. I put that $$ into a separate bank account, and it sits there untouched until someone redeems it (or I must make good on it in any case).
Once you know the laws, you can create the certificate any way you like, but make sure it clearly states how long it applies and whether it has a cash value.
I sell gift certs with no experation date. I do put a little blurb about giving a weeks notice for any large orders and wedding cakes must be ordered at least a month in advance"
If you have a Staples store around they sell gift certificates. They already come numbered with envlopes and all you have to do is fill in the amount and put a date on it....
Okay, maybe this is a stupid question, but how do I find out the laws regarding gift certificates? I tried doing an internet search but I am not coming up with anything.
Thanks,
Kathi
