Hi,

I need to make Seven Minute frosting for my husband's birthday cake. Can I use the Kitchen Aid bowl on top of a sauce pan as a double boiler? Other than that, all I have are pyrex bowls.

Sure. You can't hurt a metal bowl by putting it in hot water!

Just remember, that bowl's going to get HOT - potholder alert.

Thanks for the reply. That knob at the bottom of the bowl won't affect how well it heats the frosting, will it?

I used my KA bowl three hours ago to melt some chocolate! I left my double boiler at my sister's house and she says she keeps "forgetting" it. icon_rolleyes.gif It seemed to take a little longer to melt, but the bottom stayed warmer a littler longer as well which helped!

Thanks for the info! I really need to get a double boiler, but the bowl will have to do for now.

Dh wants an angel food cake with seven minute frosting. That's what his mom always made for him for his birthday. My grandma always used to make that for my birthday, too. I've just never attempted the frosting because of the double boiler.

Also, we live at high altitude now. Shortly after we moved here, I tried to make an angel food cake for him, but forgot to follow the high altitude directions and it made an awful mess when it overflowed in the oven. It just seemed easier to buy a pre-made one at the store. Guess I've finally gotten up the guts to try it again. I'm just going to try a boxed mix for now, but will start searching for a good scratch recipe and then figure out how to adjust it for altitude (around 5000 feet).
