Can I Make A 3D Deer Head Cake With Less Than 3 Cakes?

I'm planning on making a cake that is similar to a deer head cake. Someone emailed me some instruction on how to do one, but the instructions show 3 cakes being used. Since this cake is only going to be for 5 of us, I don't need it to be super big, but I also want to make sure that it looks good too. I was thinking that perhaps I could bake a 9x13" cake and cut it into the shape of the neck and head and perhaps bake a round cake and cut it for the ears and nose. Does that sound like that will work or should I try to bake a round cake for the head/face? Any suggestions on how to make the cake look good without having a ton of cake? If needed I could always make rice krispie treats.
I made mine out of two - 1/4 sheets. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=920593 I did not use cake for the "plaque" like it does in the instructions. I only cut out for the shape of the deer itself. Just shrink the image down to the size you need and only cut out the shape for the deer. You could also just make the ears out of gumpaste, that would cut down on cake too.
I think I'm going to bake a 9x13" cake and shape that into the neck of the animal and bake a round cake for the head. I'm just wondering if I should also bake a dome shaped cake to go on top of the round cake and try to carve out the facial features, like the eyes and the nose, or if I should just cut a wedge of cake and use that as the nose. Any suggestions?
