Ughh! Why Is My New Kitchenaid Doing This???

Darn, I thought that might have solved the problem ... but if you're using the rubber wings and still getting the residue then I am at a loss. Reading further, I see that you were able to take care of it with bar keepers friend - great!
Also, I think I read somewhere that the winged beaters are not a one size fits all. You may have to order one that fits your specific model. What a pain!
Resurrecting an old thread since this seems like a common problem--
I just bought a Kitchenaid Artisan and found gray residue in my buttercream. So, naturally I googled and found this thread.
After seeing the tips on cleaning the bowl, I decided to try the baking soda paste. I put a small amount of water in the bowl, dumped in about 1/3 cup of baking soda, and just started scrubbing with the dishcloth. I could see gray in the baking soda after scrubbing, so I rinsed then repeated, and then washed the bowl as normal. I've since made several batches of sugar cookie dough and another batch of buttercream with no gray residue!
Actually, I did a bit of research and found out it is due to the factory polishing of the bowl, which makes sense because there is no longer residue after using the baking soda paste.
Kitchenaid has more info on it here: http://producthelp.kitchenaid.com/Countertop_Appliances/Stand_Mixers/Stand_Mixer_Cleaning_and_Care/Remove_residue_from_stainless_bowls
