My Head's Foggy. Do I Have Reason To Panic?
Decorating By karateka Updated 9 Nov 2006 , 12:03am by dodibug
I'm making a 3 tier wedding cake due tomorrow morning at 10am.
white with dark chocolate scrollwork and turquoise roses placed "here and there". The bride is out of town, sent MIL with paint samples to show her first, second, third and fourth choice of turquoise color.
I dyed royal icing and thought I had a damn close match to her first choice, so I made about 30 roses using all the icing. I coverd them up with dark paper bags and kept the room dark so they wouldn't fade.
So today I finish the cake and got to put the roses in a container so I can attatch them at the site, and I (for some odd reason) check them against the paint samples again. Well.....they don't match. It's close to her second and third choice, but seems greener than her first. I don't understand it. Now in my weakened state (have had some sort of mean spirited virus or whatever for a week now, making me tired and grumpy) I'm starting to panic and wonder if I should make them over. My DH says I'm panicking over nothing, if it even comes close to one of the 4 choices she gave me, I'm ok.
What do you guys think??
I agree! They will never notice! I don't see them going around with samples checking!!!
Go take care of yourself - don't give it another thought!!! ![]()
Agree with above. Besides you could do all that work over just to have the colors change again. Get some rest so you won't be foggy for the delivery!!
you know if you're freaking out that much about it........have you thought about dusting them with some petal dusts or some chalk?? I personally wouldn 't bother especially feeling not so well.......you did match one of the colors right?? That's good enough then.
I think you'll be good to go with what you have done ... if it's in the same color scheme, she probably won't even notice the difference .. only you will and you're not telling, right?
Above mentioned sprinkling with dust.... how about sprinkling with that luster dust stuff people talk about so much? Is that possible? Is that an option? It may take away from the fact it's not 100% her first choice but it matches her 2/3 choice so be happy with that.
I made a cake for a funeral reception that was held yesterday, I worried and worried and worried over how "messy" the writing was and everyone raved about it and complimented it and finally I got yelled at to shut up about it it was fine lol. So I guess if you matched them be happy with it hun. Don't worry like mentioned above... she isn't going to be running around with a paint swatch and if they are... they have serious issues lmao
PHEW!!
Thanks, guys! I'm gonna feed my kids and then hit the rack!!
I have to admit....I didn't think about the bride running around with paint samples, checking to see if it matched. I can't see her doing that! The lady that is meeting me at the hall to set up used to do cakes, so I guess she's the one I should worry about. But she seems very reasonable. And you're right....if I did them over and they changed again, I'd shoot myself. I'd love to dust them, but don't have an appropriate color. So I'll just use them!!
I knew I could count on you guys to help me out. Thanks so much, and enjoy your weekend!
If you're close in color, you're good to go. No one is going to go up to the cake with paint chips to see if the colors match. Go to bed early, get some rest, be prepared for all the compliments you'll receive on the wonderful cake you've completed! Let's see those photos! ![]()
Hey, maybe the lighting will change the way the color looks so you might have the right color. LOL I know that the lighting in my house is not usually the same as the reception hall, so I wouldn't fret over a difference in shades. Just a thought, don't roses change color during the day anyway? Really, don't worry about it. Treat yourself to a hot bath and a cup of tea and put yourself to bed.
Well, here it is! The lady that was there to sign for it watched my every move like a hawk, which was making me nervous as hell since she used to do cakes herself. There was a flake of cake on the outside of the cake, right on the frosting, and I know she saw it. I made a comment about how I hate it when I get cake crumbs on my frosting, and she agreed. But I hated having her there watching me that closely. Made me a wreck! But I think the cake turned out great! Let me know what you think, I can take constructive criticism.
It is just beautiful! I'm saving it to my iphotos!
Here's a tip I read somewhere to deal with color swatches/samples. Explain to the bride (or whoever) that we are dealing with icing and therefore we can try to come close to the shade but there will always be veriations because icing is and reacts far different that paper or material swatches. When I ever make up my contract there will be a clause that includes that info that they will initial! ![]()
Well, I just heard back from the grooms mother about this cake. She says it was very pretty. Then she said that they got some feedback that it was dry.
I don't understand, this has never happened to me before! I baked Thursday evening, decorated Friday, delivered Sat am. I used tried and true recipes, with simple syrup brushed on the layers.
Plus, now I don't know how to respond. Am I supposed to offer money back? They did taste my cakes before they bought, no comments about being dry....
What would you do?
Did she say it was dry or just that some people said it was? I always sample some of the cake tops when i level a cake just to check taste, ect but I don't think I would offer money back because the people who said it was dry may be of the box mix generation and don't know what a scratch cake tastes like or that the mouth feel is different than a mix. Not to say that all scratch cakes are dry (because they aren't!!) but when people are so used to the super moist box mix consistency anything less is dry! If you know the product was the same quality that they sampled I wouldn't worry about it.
She said she got some feedback that it was dry. I did sample the cake tops, and they didn't seem dry to me, and they weren't sprinkled with syrup. I broke one layer of my chocolate tier, forgot to cover it with plastic wrap and it wasn't even dry the next day! My DH and kids were fighting over it.
I guess you're right....if someone's used to boxed, they might feel anything else is dry. Thanks. I needed someone to speak common sense to me. I was pretty down earlier.
I got my feedback form back today. She marked me high in service and all other aspects, but neutral on taste. She wrote on the bottom that some people reported that the cake was dry. She also wrote that she appreciated what I did for them.
I guess there are people who just don't like scratch cakes. The thing is, I'm unwilling to switch to boxed, mainly because I hate mixes. I guess I'm just going to have to encourage tastings for every wedding, so there aren't any surprises.
I think that's a great idea becuase liked we were talking about, some people just don't even know what a scratch cake tastes like and it's not going to be the same as a mix. And that way you'll know the bride and groom are happy with their cake and that's all that really matters! ![]()
