O.k. guys my daughter just declared that she does not want a High school Musical cake for her birthday but a Shirley Temple cake instead.
WHAT!!!!!
My daughter will be seven but is a very old soul. My husband was severly wounded in Afghanistan when she was 2 so she saw so many things while we were at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. So she loves Shirley Temple movies because my husbnd introduced them to her. She loves to sing and dance, so was hooked. But a cake?? How? what? I just dont know. Her b-day is Oct. 5 so I have time to come up with something and I'm sure she will change her mind by then...Or will she
ANy Ideas?
Oh, you could have so much fun with that!! Shirley Temple is so adorable! What about a buttercream transfer... or, if you have an edible image printer you could wrap a cake with her favorite scenes from ST movies!! There are so many things you could do! I think it's wonderful that your DH introduced her to such a classic character! That's the only way to keep them alive!!
My DD is still a Shirley Temple addict she's 28 and so am I Google Images for shirley temple there are hundreds of pictures of her. Maybe have an edible image made of her There are some sights that sell them. I'd try edible image .com that might work. HTH Good Luck
which movie is her favorite?
There is a fabulous stair dancing scene in one....staircase with a Shirley cut out?
Good Ship Lollypop? Make a ship! With Lollipops!
I think it might be a little gruesome to have the head of Shirley Temple on a platter....
Maybe choose a scene or a song....
just some ideas.....
Good luck and THANK YOU to you, your husband and your family for fighting for us in Afghanistan. My prayers are with you!
Erin
i LOVE shirley temple......so cute....and Im still in my twenties!! Anyhow........I think it would be really cool to do even just a round cake and have little blocks of actual still shots from different shows in black and white...maybe have them turned into edible images??? Would look so cool
Hi There:
You can do as the others said: an edible image of her...and decorate it in bright pink.
Also, you could curl fondant pieces (to resemble her hair) and place them all over the cake. Just an idea!
If you need help curling the fondant pieces, let me know...
HTH! =)
I am a HUGE Shirley Temple fan myself--how about her famous "Animal Cackers in My Soup" song--the cake could be a"bowl of soup" with the animal crackers in it of course, and Shirley herself could be a large cookie or a fondant figure.
A "Good Ship Lollipop" cake could work too--(actually, the ship referred to is not a boat but an airplane). The words of the song make me visualize a little town on the "sunny beach of Peppermint Bay" with candy shops and lemonade stands and a plane landing on a chocolate bar...
"Curly Top" (w/Animal Crackers song) is my favorite ST movie. Allmydolls.com is a great ST site. Loretta has a very extensive collection and lots of pix. I have a few ST Doll books, if you come up with an idea and need a scanned picture of something, let me know and I'll be happy to send it to ya
I am sooo jealous! I would love to do a Shirley Temple themed cake. I am a huge fan. I have all but one of her movies. My younger daughter is the spitting image of her, she even has the same hair and eye color it's a shame she didn't get my dimples. As for the cake I always wanted to do a reproduction of one of Shirley's b-day cakes it was a tiered cake with a nautical theme. I also like the collage idea.
I love Shirley Temple as well, but I was named after her by my older sister and have never liked the name for myself. One of my favorite songs she did was "Animal ctackers in my soup" the lyrics are pretty cute, well all but drowning the wolf, that was a bit graphic, maybe you could mold some doing the tricks she sings about.

Thanks everybody! All your ideas sound great and I appreciate all your help. We are watching Curly Top right now for a few ideas. We had a box set of movies but my 2yr old DD has somehow "misplaced" them. So we have only found curly top and little miss broadway. I am trying to get INSPIRED ![]()
Thanks
My mom who is in her seventies collects the Shirley Temple dolls - so she has been a favorite of our family for many years. On a funny note, when my daughter was in kindergarten I got a call from her teacher asking me to come to the school as "we have a big problem with your daughter Lynette." Horrified, I rushed to the school to find out that Lynette was convinced (by my sister) that she was the "real" Shirley Temple. She insisted on being called Shirley, and even signed her name Shirley on her school work. I laughed and was reprimanded by the teacher, but we worked it out and all was well. That was over 20 years ago, but we still have fun with it to this day.
If you do a google search on Shirley Temple-it comes up with millions of things and it's easy to become inspired. So many of the ideas here are great-I love animal crackers in my soup..that would be so cute. If your daughter likes to dance, how about a pair of tap shoes? I also love the collage cake-that would be awesome...please keep us up to date, especially what your decision ends up being, I can't wait to see.
