Don't know about anywhere else in the world but here in Wales cake dummies can be quite expensive so I made my own. I took all the polystyrine ( not sure if thats spelt right!) out of the box my TV was in and cut it to size with a kitchen knife, I then covered it with cling film/shrink wrap, cellotaped it and Voila !! homemade cake dummies for free icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I need slapped for not thinking of that! I've been driving myself insane trying to figure out an inexpensive way to make cake dummies and here I sit with two boxes full of packing material waiting to get taken out to the garbage!

Thank you!

I wondered why people don't use the styrofoam that is in the floral section of the craft store. Is it because there isn't the right size or shape, or is it a different type of styrofoam?

I use rice crispie treats sometimes...then you can eat the cake dummy, too!

If you are talking about the green stuff I don't think it would work. If you press your fingr into it it leaves indents and it crumbles like sand and makes one heck of a mess...how do I know that? Don't let you dh give it to the kids to play with are you'll find out too!!

Depends on which Styro you use. The green stuff that dents easy is a water absorbing foam. The other green stuff is not the same as the beaded type. If you are in the states dummies are super cheap. More cheap than rice cereal dummies. Mine are less than $2.00 a piece with shipping.

I just picked up some white hard foam stuff at Hobby Lobby today - it was in the craft section, not teh floral section but was teh same brand as the harder (non water absorbing) green stuff in the floral section and it was cheaper (probably cause it was 1" tall vs the green was 2"). I got a 7 7/8" x 1" round for $2.47 (and I used my 40% coupon on it so it was only $1.48 thumbs_up.gif )

I'm going to use it for a lid for a hat box cake I want to try...

That's what I mean, the white stuff. The green is weird!

At Wal-Mart I think it's in their little tiny floral section and at my Michael's it's next to the green foam in the floral section too.

Thanks for posting your idea lynseyg2002!!
