So, my mom works at one of the schools in town, and has been taking my practice cakes to school, and well, basically pimping me out. icon_wink.gif
Lately there has been a lot of interest, and I have one order from a lady she works with for next week, and 2 others that are interested. The problem I am having is the ideas my mom keeps suggesting to her co-workers!
The cake for next week is a little girls 1st birthday, and my mom suggested that I make a cake with a little girl pulling the tail of the dog. Yeesh, a little complicated, but maybe I can make it work.
One of the other ladies is interested in a cake for her daughter's 16th birthday. My mom suggests a cake shaped to look like a bed with a girl sitting on it talking on the phone. Yikes - guess I better get working on my fondant figurine skills.
Then a lady asks if I could make a cake in the shape of a horse head - and my mom says, yeah, no problem!
I am really grateful that she is trying to help me out, I really am...but I am worried that she is way more confident in my skills than I am - I mean, a horse head?
Just my little vent for Friday. icon_smile.gif

That's wonderful that your mom is helping you out like that! Good luck with trying to fullfill your mom's promises. There's nothing like a good challenge to make you learn a new technique. Your cakes look great! Your mom has great reason to be so confident in your skills! thumbs_up.gif

I would just tell your mom that you appreciate her confidence in her work, but that you would prefer to do the design consultations yourself for the time being. Not only do you need the experience in getting your creative juices flowing, but you get a better feel for what the customer wants and you don't have to worry about making a cake you don't feel comfortable making right now.

I agree with DianaMarie. Even though you do make very good cakes, it is still a creative process...brainstormed btwn you and your client. Your encouraging mom could say something like, "I'm sure she would be more than happy to discuss that idea with you....but I can't speak for her as to what she can/cannot do."

You are fortunate to have this great word-of-mouth. Just make a helpful hint to mom. She obviously wants to help you.....so, she needs to be supportive and encouraging in a way that is actually helpful. You don't want to disappoint people who have been sent to you....It sounds like she will be happy to comply. She does, after all, love you and wants to see you succeed.

Thanks for the advice all!
I'll be sure to have a chat with her this weekend, thanking her for all of her help, and just letting her know that I don't want to disappoint anyone if she comes up with an idea I just cannot execute. icon_smile.gif

Yikes!! Your cakes are beautiful!!
And yes I feel your pain!!! my sister tells everyone about my cakes.. and I too have recieved orders from her friends at work.. WELL a few days ago she calls and says " hey I got a lady who wants a cake for Dec. I'm thinking cool a christmas cake.. Then she says she needs it to be the shape of a Buffalo.. Not a image not plastic buffalos.. but the whole cake to be a buffalo.. icon_confused.gif I'm thinking WTH??? I said Vicky I dont have no dang buffalo pics.. I havent seen a buffalo in a real long time!!! LOL Then she says but she only wants it to feed her,her husband and her 2 kids.. Ok 4 people??? That the lady has been to every bakery she can think of and no one is willing to do this.. The story is her husband is Indian.. And its a tradition or religion (forgot which one) to have a Buffalo shaped cake with plastic buffalos all around it at Christmas time.. for his tribe..I'm thinking, plastic buffalos? So I finally said, Ok I can make it, but it will feed around 15 - 20 people.. smallest I can do.. and she will have to supply me with the plastic buffalos.. I charged her 45. It doesnt end there.. My sister says, well she kinda dont have alot of money.. So she will pay you little by little each week until she pays off the 45... cool? I'm thinking, whatever thats fine.. Shes goofy sometimes, my sister!! icon_biggrin.gif

I looked at your pictures; if you are looking for a horse head that looks about your speed, try this one. I couldn't do it, but it looks like YOU could do a good job with it:

meghanb,
Based on your pictures your mom has every right to brag!! Your cakes are awesome.
but I do understand about "Whoa, Mom". Sometimes the moms get a little too excited for their talented daughters! My mom is the same way with my sewing. I do understand and just feel proud that your mom loves you that much!

Your cakes are perfect.. you can definitely do these cakes.. but it would be good if she ask you first before saying yes to everybody.

She is a good agent ... and pimp.. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I think your pictures are awsome and even though it sucks to have your mom tell people you can do things that you may not think you can at least your mom has faith in you. I think you would do a great job.

It sounds like your mom has a lot of confidence in your abilities. It's better than my MIL who is always telling me I should just make a sheet cake to make it simple. If your mom doesn't tell you how to go about getting the cakes done I will happily trade, the MIL also tells me what I should use to decorate them. (She has never decorated a cake in her life).
