Can anyone please help me with a GOOD old fashioned recipe for Tea Cakes. I've run across a few recipes but they've all had a sugar cookie taste. icon_redface.gif I want the old fashioned tea cakes. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, any recipes or where I may be able to find one....please let me know asap.

Thanks

Down here, we just use a buttermilk bisquit recipe adding sugar and vanilla.

You wouldn't believe how well some people can make these! icon_smile.gif

Hey Knoxcop1.......Thanks for such a quick reply. It seems that quite a few people has looked at the post and maybe I lost them along the way with my description of tea cakes, but I'm sure glad you replied. If you don't mind, would you give me full details. I think I got lost when you mentioned the bisquits. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks

It's basically just a scone recipe!

Only you're using a buttermilk biscuit from scratch. Just make them up with the usual ingredients, and you'll add some sugar and vanilla.

Hold on and let me type in granny's recipe for them; She was German/Indian, but she made the best tea cakes.... icon_smile.gif

Do you mean just a little something to have with tea? or is this a name of a particular cake? I make all kinds of scones to have with tea and the recipe I use (which is my own) is super moist and you can make so many different flavors with the base recipe.

Tea Scones

Ingredients
2 cups sifted flour
2 tablespoon sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup butter, at room temperature
1 egg, at room temperature
3/4 cup buttermilk, at room temperature

Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt; blend in butter with a pastry blender. Add egg and milk. Mix quickly and lightly until no flour shows.

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead 4 or 5 times. Cut dough in half and shape into a ball. Roll into a round shape; cut into 8 wedges. You can also make these into rounds, just like biscuits. Repeat with other half. Place wedges or rounds on a cookie sheet and bake for 12 minutes.

I use a recipe that is for an English Tea Cake, it has raisins and citron, I used real butter. The cake was very similar to a sugar cookie, and soft on the inside and lightly browned on the bottom and top.

Just tried this recipe for the first time and was quite pleased - might be what you're looking for:

Tea Cakes

3 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
1 tsp flavoring (vanilla, lemon depending on what you like)

Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together. Add shortening, mixing in with fork. Add unbeaten eggs and vanilla. Roll out onto a floured board and cut out. Bake in a moderate oven for about 8 minutes.

( I got 2 1/2 dozen 1 1/2 inch cookies from 1/3 of a batch)
