I Have heard about rolling fondant on vinyl for bigger cakes and then peeling it off once the fondant is on the cake. Has anyone heard of this. I am just wondering wouldnt the fondant stick to the vinyl if you dont put sugar or cornstarch on the vinyl. Does anyone know about this technique?
Can anyone give me advise I am putting fondant on a 11 x 15 sheet cake.

It does work very well. I learned it in a class that I took and we just rubbed a small amount of crisco on the vinyl and it did not stick at all. Made it a lot easier to cover a big cake.

Forgot to add this. This is how we did it. You measure the size of the cake. Then on the counter of table (wherever you are rolling out the fondant) you use the rulder and meausre out the size of the cake on the table and put little pieces of tape. Then put the vinyl on top of that.. This way when rolling out, you know how far you have to roll. I hope that made sense..

I would probably still dust it to be sure. I use MMF so I always use a very small amount of crisco on my vinyl so that it doesn't stick, because for me the fondant doesn't roll out as well on a cornstarch dusted surface. The crisco gives it some traction I guess, if that makes sense...somehing to hold onto.

oh.......so you roll it out as usual and then place the vinyl on top of the fondant that you have already rolled then transfer it on to the cake and peel the vinyl off? or do you roll while the vinyl is on the fondant.

You would roll it on top of the vinyl, and place fondant side down over cake and peel off vinyl.

I assume you understand, but to clarify. You place a piece of vinyl, ( preferably clear and the thicker the better) on a table or wherever you are going to roll your fondant. coat with a little Crisco. Place an adequate amount of fondant on the vinyl and roll. As stated earlier you can place tape on the table as a guide to know what size to roll. Th fondant will stick to the vinyl just enough that it will not fall off. You place the fondant on the vinyl on the cake fondant side down. Then you will basically peel the vinyl off of the fondant. Start one edge, have someone hold the fondant, and someone start peeling away the vinyl. This is how we move large pieces of fondant.
