I recently tried using wilton fondant for the first time and though it looked beautiful, i could not get past the texture, is there a type of fondant with a slightly less gum like texture that is mabye a little sweeter? i was concidering the MMF recipie, is that more texture friendly?

Everyone loves the MMF recipe-except me. It's just too much hassle for me. I like Pettinice, but find that it's not quite as easy to work with as the Wilton. There have been many nasty things said about the Wilton fondant, but let me go on record as saying it's probably the easiest to work with. If I am making things that won't be eaten I use the Wilton purchased with a 40% coupon. It may taste bad, but da*n that stuff will do anything. Save the good fondant for covering the cakes and stuff that people might actually eat.

The MMF is not chewy at all. I cant stand fondant either for this reason. MMF can be flavored if you want to change the taste. It can be a little of a hassle to make, but for the cost savings, I am willing to make it. Less than $1 per pound compared to $4 per pound for fondant.

Only a few members like Wilton fondant. I consider it more of a teaching medium than something to serve.

I use SatinIce, and I roll it to only 1/8 inch thick. I would roll it thicker if I could, but I just can't seem to get it that small.

I love fondant. I use Pettinice. If you follow the instructions on their website, their fondant is easy to use, looks good, tastes good after you flavor it and it holds it shape beautifully. My husband made some of the Marshmallow Fondant and I must say I don't like it. It' tastes horrible until you flavor it (but then again so does all fondant). I use oil flavorings and cran-raspberry is just about the best I've found and it makes the taste better but the MMF is just too sticky, you can't mold with it,, you can't swag with it, it sticks to everything it touches. I have had success with it using a thin coating of shortening on the table or cutting mat, but over all I just don't like it. For the price I will use it on non-wedding cakes that people want fondant on. I have tried several different fondants and Pettinice is the best in my honest opinion. Wilton fondant is just the nastiest stuff out there. I'd rather put playdoh on a cake than to use wilton's. Satinice is too sweet, Fondix is ok but lacks the texture of the Pettinice. I have yet to have the pettinice not do what I needed it to and I'll stick with that. Yes it's more expensive but you get what you pay for. Buy cheap tools and get cheap outcome.

I've used them all, tasted them all. MMF has been the best for me. Soooo easy to work with. I just started marbeling it and I LOVE it. The color combinations are endless and I love seeing how they turn out!

Elfie,

I'm with you! Wilton fondant tastes terrible but it's so versatile!! I use it for most of my decorations and sometimes even mix it with gumpaste.

For overall taste and texture, I'm a big fan of MMF but hate making it (so messy!). I like the taste of chocopan, but find it rips easily.

Satin Ice is the one I use most. I find it's the best compromise.

Just my $.02

thank you all for your input. i am going to try the MMF. i have noticed that there is a MMF recipie wich uses a microwave and crisco, and then there is a "easy mmf" recipie that uses marshmellow fluff and powdered sugar... has anyone tried the "easy mmf" recipie? does it taste the same? does it tare more eaisly?
