Not so funny story long
Well two weeks ago Aug 19th I was contacted by a friend I make cakes for. Her sister in law was getting married Aug 25th and is having a problem with her decorator can I make her wedding cake for her. So I talked to the Sister in law she said the decorator puts silk flowers on the cake and also is doing the silk flowers for her wedding. She went to view the flowers and they were not what she ordered and was upset and wanted to cancel her order with her and now needed a cake and there was no one else the last minute. My first suggestion was to stay with that decorator and bear with it as it is too last minute and I am scheduled to work that Saturday and cannot set up her cake. She literally begged me to save her wedding. The only other option I had for her was I could make it but someone had to pick it up and either I would have it pre assembled or someone else could assemble it. I made it quite clear that if I did this the moment they picked up the cake it was no longer my responsibility and that getting a cake from me this way was probably just as much of a risk as getting it from the first decorator because I am not able to be there to set it up. OK So the cake is made 4 tier (I tried to talk her into 3 because it would be easier to transport she said go big or go home)
She told me she was coming to pick up this cake and at 8:30 that Saturday morning two guys show up UGH!!! So I give them a lecture about keeping the cake level and driving very carefully. Well they open up the back hatch and I set the cake on the floor and off they go. A week goes by and Im thinking something has happened because no one has emailed me to thank me for saving the day. I see the sister in law at Wal Mart and asked her how everything went she said they had an accident with the cake. She says they said the cake just fell over! What I dont think so! I said they must have been driving like hot dogs (they looked like hot dogs) and thats how the cake fell over. She says I thought that was what happened I didnt believe them. They said he had the cake on his lap and it just fell over. Wrong again he did not have it on his lap I put it in the back. So she goes to get a rental dummy cake and when they set it up it breaks into pieces as well. I feel very bad for this bride I would like to email her but I dont know what to say. Maybe I could offer her a free replica for her top that she didnt have for her anniversary. I just dont want to sound like I think any of this is my fault although she is not getting an accurate story from the guys who came and picked it up.
what a sad day for the bride! i can't believe she cancelled her other cake over flowers. surely she could have bought them herself, and told the other decorator to put htem on? that way she would know she was getting the right ones....
i think i might ask your friend to casually mention to the bride that she spoke with you, and explain it a little. she can tell her SIL that you put it in the back of the car, and that it was very sturdy when you handed it over. i know my friends would be happy to do this for me, and that way you don't look like you're getting defensive about it.
Wow, what a shame, its beautiful, I bet you hated to let go of that one, especially to a couple of guys.
What a shame that such a gorgeous cake had to be ruined like that.
Your offer of making the topper for the bride is really nice. I hope she takes you up on it and can laugh someday about her cake(s). And I hope they got pictures of the smushed cake for the photo album. ![]()
you told her the risks . you told her you could not help with the set up. she knew what she was getting into. its her problem not yours

Something doesn't sound right with their story. First, you put the cake in the back, not on his lap, I mean why would you do something like that, I know you know more than that to put a cake on someones lap. Then, If you think about it, she cancelled the cake over flowers, but the one that you made for her had NO FLOWERS. So what the other decorator couldn't do a cake like the one that you made. Why did she reeally want to cancell a cake so last miniute. I am sure that she paid for it, so I am sure that she would want to work something out with someone that is already paid and not have to pay for something AGAIN. That is if she really had a cake ordered. Than the rental dummy cake breaks too. I don't think so. They are sturdier than a regular cake and they don't just break apart, unless you beat the daylights out of it. LOLOLOL. So what are they trying to get out of this in the end, money back. Hummm. Uh, NO!!!! The cake was delivered and since you weren't the one delivering it that becomes their responsabity. I have in my contract that when I DON"T deliver the cake, once the cake has left my hands I am no longer responsible for anything that happends to the cake. Just to cover myself from this very thing. To many way to have an accident, I don't need to lose money for someone elses mistakes. I don't think so.....

Abso-freaking-lutely. (and don't think the other decorator isn't laughing her butt off over this story! karma, ya know!)
BTW, what a lovely cake. I am sure she is kicking herself in the A*$ for the "accident" if their really was one.

I don't think you should contact her at all, especially not to offer a free replica of the top. Their whole story sounds false. I think that by contacting them you may open a can of worms. They may try to blame you if the cake did actually fall over. Who cancels their cake just before the wedding? No, leave it alone.
