Can someone tell me how a rose is made out of Tootsie Rolls? Do you sort of make the candy pliable and do the rest as if working with fondant/gumpaste?

yes you can microwave the tootsie roll for about 5-7 secs so it becomes soft and go at it like you would a fondant rose.

Tootsie Rolls are very heat-sensitive, and can be modeled into almost any form.

You can make the roses the same way you do the fondant or gumpaste roses, or if you do not have the tools, they can be made by hand. Make a base, as you would for any other rose. Press out the petals by hand, then wrap them around the base. Remember to make the petals slightly larger as you go out from the base, and to angle them if you want an open rose.

Halloween is one of the best times of year, because all the great Tootsie Roll flavors come out, White, Frooties, and they all make great decorations.

Tootsie Rolls are like a very soft chocolate taffy, which several cake decorators use to make embellishments for cakes.
If you go into my pics, you will see a cheeseburger cake that had Tootsie Roll bacon strips, onion rings and tomato slices on it.

What no saltwater taffy in the UK? What is "taffy"? A medium soft candy somewhere between a marshmellow and a chocolate in consistency. Holds its shape but is very malliable. Comes in all sorts of shapes and flavors. Christmas is a time that taffy is sold in bags, wrapped in colorful x-mas type paper.

wow, that burger cake is awesome!! I have a few tootsie roll roses in my pics, on my fall cakes, as well.

In addition to getting the different colored tootsie rolls at this time of year, you can also use Starburst candies just like you would tootsie rolls.

Here's the tutorial someone sent me from CC:

I will volunteer to send you some, if you'd like. They are made by the Tootsie Roll Ind Inc in Illinois. I could "rob" some out of my kids trick or treat bags. They will never miss them. I am not sure though if they would make it past customs.....hmm I'll have to ask the USPS people.
