I've done both. Airbrushing it used less of the dust because it could go on in a thinner coat but still look even. I'm not too good at hand-painting anything, LOL. Since using the airbrush to luster an entire 3-tier cake a couple weeks ago, I'm hooked on that now.
I used Everclear to thin the dust for the airbrush.

It depends on the effect you are after.
If you want a more subtle effect, you can brush it on dry, with a large, soft brush (I use make-up brushes for this - NEW, please!
)
For a stronger effect, airbrushing is best, if possible, because you can use so much less.
I have always been a little nervous about using too much lustre dust, some contain aluminium and, while you are not likely to be using so much that it would be at dangerous levels, I still get a little wary.
