Hey everyone...I have a quick question. I have been decorating for a couple of years and have always wanted to take Wilton classes. I have a friend who is interested in decoarting and wants to take the classes with me, but she has no experience. I am wondering what all is included specifically in course 1, because no place in my area is offering course 1 right now, only course 2 and 3. SO, here is my question. I was thinking that maybe I could teach her basics like smoothing icing and simple borders and roses, and then we could take course 2 together? What does everyone think about that plan? Would she still be way out of her league in the class; would I still be way out of MY league?? I just don't know specifically what course 1 deals with. Thanks in advance for any help!

In Course I, you pretty much learn the basics of cake decorating. You learn the different icing consistencies and what borders/pipings you can use with them, the rose, etc.

What you could probably do is get her to pick up the Wilton I Course Book and teach the basics from there since you already have 2 years of decorating under your belt!!! HTH

No way would you be out of your league!! Course 1 covers so much VERY basic stuff like stars and the shell border... you might even be bored with it and intentionally want to skip it. She would not be lost if you taught her stars, shells, leaves, and roses, that is seriously almost all you learn. Oh, writing on a cake as well. If you want more specifics, let me know, I can kind of give you an outline of what you'd have to teach her!!

I'm sure you would be completely able to teach your friend. I know that this may not be a requirement in your area since you can't find a Course 1 to take, but where I am, we have to present proof that we completed the previous level to register for the next class. Ex: I have a certificate of completion from Wilton I that I have to keep in order to register for Wilton 2, etc.

I happened to take the class at a Michael's craft store - not sure if that is a Wilton requirement or a Michael's store policy. Do any Wilton instructors out there know?

In our Course 3 class, we had a new girl who did not take Course 1 & 2 with us. Later, I found out that she already new most of the stuff of cake decorating. She said someone had given her all of her pans, books, etc. and she basically taught herself. She was showing us pictures of cakes she had done and she was really good. I don't even know why she took Course 3 unless it was just to see how to do the tiered cakes.

They are no longer making it mandatory to take them in order. You can take any class at any time, at least around here.

ccsweetness, if you PM me an email addy I will send you some stuff I use to teach course 1. icon_wink.gif

Hey, Melvira,

If you go on the Wilton site, and look under Cake, then under Decorating Techniques. You can find lots of instructions there.

Oh yah!! That's an excellent source! If you can't take the classes it will show you how to do everything! Or, if you took them and haven't done a technique for a while, it's a GREAT brush up!! Thanks T!
