I'm doing my first wedding cake next month and I have to do a 3-tier cake. The tiers are going to be 16, 12, and 8-inch round cakes, but I was wondering...on average, how tall should each tier be? I tried a practice tier today (baked in an 8"x3" pan) and completely decorated, it came out to be 3.75". Is that about right, or should it be taller?

Any input would be appreciated--thanks!

Diane

All the wedding cakes I've done have been double layered but I use the 2" pans I always here about 4" so your close. Truthfully I never measure I just double them and go. Have fun and take a picture.

Agree with debster. There's no Cake Police going around with a ruler so just let your talent shine! thumbs_up.gif

If you do the 8x3 just include the filling and it should be close to 8x4 by the time it is all decorated. I wouldn't worry about to much.
