There are so many great hints, tips and ideas on CC. And I want to try them all.

How do you all practice new techniques? Do you make practice cakes? Do you work on dummy/styrofoam forms? Do you just perfect your techniques as you make cakes for others?

I've been practicing on my nieces' and nephews' cakes and, being kids, they are happy with any cake. I was just wondering what any of you do.

Thanks for any advice!

I usually make a cake when i want to try something but you can use dummies, you can use the outside of your cake pan so that when you are done you can just scrape the frosting off and reuse. I've seen some people practice on plates or you can use practice board. hth. have fun practicing.

Hi there!
I practice BC on my upsidedown cake pans for something like ruffles or swags...(when I don't want to mess up a real cake)

I make a lot of practice cakes just with a cake mix and the BC crisco icing then take them to work...usually once a week.

I haven't practiced with fondant other than my course III cakes but I will probably do the cake mix thing again...

A big cakey welcome from CC!

I practice on the cake. There have been some really badly decorated cakes, but little kids are happy to have cake, everything else is just "icing on the cake" (ha ha). Have lots of fun and try not to be too critical.

Welcome to CC! What i normally try to do is practice my piping and new methods on the cakepan themselves. Then about 2-3 times a month, i bake a real cake and practice my fondants and BC icing. When I see a cake I love here- I attempt to do it as soon as I can~ there are so many great techniques here! My husband & child loves the cake regardless of what it turns out looking like! HTH!

You could make a "practice cake" and try out the new techniques you want to try and then enter them in the cake decorating contests here on CC! I tried using buttercream for the first time on upsidedown cake tins for the All buttercream wedding cake contest! The contests have been a great reason for me to get in and try new things!

I practice on customers! LOL I bounce it off them, if they care, and they say "go for it". LOL!

I practice on small 1-layer cakes and 8 inch sugar cookies.
