I am making a race car birthday cake and I was thinking it would be really cool to drape the fondant over the cake so it looks like a checkered flag draped on it. Only problem is that I don't know how to make checkered fondant. I could drape the white fondant on and then paste little black squares on, but that seems like it would be tough, especially on the folds.
I've never done this so I really don't know what would work but if I were going to try it, I would actually checker the fondant first and then drape it over because it would be really hard to do it in the folds. You could cut out black squares and put them on the white fondant or maybe you could just paint the squares on with black color?
I am with SUE I would do the checkered flag first then drape it!
I figured that's what I would most likely do, but I don't know how I would get all those squares on fast enough to keep the fondant from drying out. It's going to cover a half sheet cake!
If it's that big you'll have to work quickly. You may have luck cutting your squares out first, maybe mix your fondant with some Crisco to slow down the drying time. I may be talking out the side of my neck but that's what I'd try. Let us know how it goes!

As you go along putting the squares on the bottom piece of fondant keep plastic wrap, or best yet a piece of vinyl or those rubber mat things (what do they call them silcone mats or something) with a little bit of shortening on it on top of the parts of the fondant you aren't working on at that moment. This will help to keep the fondant soft while you are working. I would definitly have my sqaures pre-cut and you can keep them soft too this same way. GOOD LUCK!
