I was just asked to do a last minute (Nov. 10th) cake for a relative. They need a small (almost mini) wedding cake for a last minute military wedding. She asked for a 3 tier stacked, BC w/ a few roses. I saw one in the gallery that is 3,5,6 in. that looks like what I have in mind. I've never stacked before so I need advise on the dowels, if I need them for one this small. I may even make each layer just a single layer b/c they will be transporting it for about 3 hours. Any advise? Thanks so much!

you could make them double layers......but I would highly suggest putting in a central dowel...those little buggers like to move around on ya! Not sure you would need dowels in each layer......but you might want to put each cake on it's own little cake board just for the ease of serving the cake!

I'm going to be making one of those small tiered cakes for my bookclub group. GRRR, I don't want to use a dowel. Will the cake boards take care of them not moving around? Also, what does "double layers" mean? TIA a bunch.

I would dowel no matter what size it is if it has to travel 3 hours. You don't want a tier to slide off or anything. Better to be safe than sorry.
