Filling A Layer Cake...please Help!!!

can someone PLEASE tell me how i can get a nice layer of filling in a cake...i have tried and tried and it always squwishes out and when you cut the cake there is hardly anything there...so if theres a tip , trick what ever will somebody let me know so i can stop pulling my hair out. Thanks
You need to pipe a 'dam' of icing (medium consistency) around the edge of the cake and then fill the dam will your filling. Make the dam the same icing as what you are covering the sides of the cake with if possible. This way if some of the icing dam bulges out when you have filled the cake and put the other layer on top, it's easy to incorporate the 'extra' icing onto the sides of the cake.

I agree with everybody else on the dam. I also put a thin layer of icing on the cake, the dam then the filling. The layer of icing helps keep the filling from "soaking" into the cake. I've done it without the layer and I like the results with it better.
