I've recently began cake decorating again, for friends, family, ect. i was taught several years ago and am only a buttercream kind of gal. anyway, i wanted to attempt to use fondant since the cakes i've seem come out so beautifull. do you buy fondant? make it from scratch? if anyone has imput that would be great. like, how to color it? and how to attach it to a cake. what specific tools do you recommend.
i appreciate the help and look forward to my first attempt.
thanks so much.

I usually use Satinice fondant, but have used marshmallow fondant before. I prefer the satinice, but I usually only use it if I'm selling the cake, as it's not cheap.

I attatch it to the cake with a thin layer of buttercream usually: but you can also use a layer of jam or jelly or piping gel or ganache.

I'd get a large rolling pin and a large mat, like a roulpat to roll it out on. Some embossers would be nice to have, but you'd have to buy those as needed for whatever design you want to make.

I color mine with regular americolor gel colors. For black and red I usually buy it premade. Some people airbrush theirs, and I'm going to try that soon.

I'm sure somebody else out there has some good advice, too.

hi there,
a lot of people make there own but i don't have the patience. i buy mine (satin ice...tastes great...most taste nasty).

coloring it is fairly simple but a bit time consuming. just knead in food coloring (Americolor) using powdered sugar to keep it from sticking.

to "attach" it to the cake...
covering a cake - roll out to about an 1/8 inch thick and lay it on top of your ICED cake (crumb coated) and smooth out with a fondant smoother then trim (i use a pizza cutter)
adding accents - use a SMALL amount of water as "glue" to apply fondant accents
