Well for now I've been eyeballing it LOL but if I was doing it for a cake for someone else I'd either do as Brickflor suggests or I'd use my Wilton marker thingy...they have a stringwork marker that marks where to put them. You can adust the width and height of the strings and then you press it into the cake and it leaves little pin pricks to follow. Only bad with that is if you don't get it just on you may have extra little holes not covered up! Which is why just measuring out at the top and marking the base of the loop is the best I think.
[quote="Brickflor"]Let me start by saying your cakes are beautiful!! When I do strings I like to mark my cake around the top, then measure how far down I want them to drop and mark again. Hope this helps

I agree with this method for doing string work. If you use a marker to mark the entire thing your string work will have a drawn on look to it. You need to attach the string at the top...let it drop to the desired length then attach the other end at the top. It makes a nice drape look to the strings. Make the lower mark half way between where you attach the string from the top and let it drop to that point.
