I have an inquiry about a wedding cake that is chocolate and white fondant that looks like tooled leather. It looks like the texture of a saddle. It is for a western themed wedding. the couple brought me a 2 x 2 inch picture from a magazine and asked if I could do it. I do think I can, but I am wondering how to get the grain of the leather look onto the chocolate fondant. Also, it looks like there is "stitching" on the fondant. Does anyone know what type of impression tool works best for this? I appreciate any help. The picture was from wedding style magazine, and when she e-mails it to me, I will gladly post a picture. Just wanting to get a heads up. The local bakery turned them down and said they cannot make the cake. They said they don't have time to do that cake. Any suggestions you may have are greatly appreciated.

I made a "leather" tool belt on a cake in my photos. I used a tool that had a serrated edge that came in a Children's set that was for candy clay. I found it on the Wilton website: http://www.wilton.com/yearbook/productinfo/2005kandyclay.cfm. In the picture, it is the green tool. It worked well.

I did the strap on this bag by hand with a fondant tool .... but I wish I had thought of using the tracing tool found in almost any fabric store. would have been much straighter stiches then I did by hand. P.S. A cuticle pusher for nails would work also.

Wilton sells a tool for like $2.00. That has three diffrent pattern wheels. Stitching is one of them. Works great! I did the stitching on this cake with it. As for making the leather look worn, I've seen where somone used powdered food coloring (maybe in black?) and used a sponge to dab on the brown fondant to give it a worn look.
