The cake I am making in May the bride wants pink and platinum plaid and they want a ribbon (square cake). I am going to use MMF and paint the stripes on. (see my pic) I experimented with painting the pink stripes and I really like them, but am not sure about the platinum. I figure I'll use luster dust, but I've never used it before. I have the silver/gold/pearl stuff from wilton, but I am starting to think that stuff is useless. What do I want to get that silvery color? Do I mix the luster dust with vodka?
What about the ribbon, do you think it would be too much with the stripes? They really want the ribbon, although they wonder if it is over the top. Since it is MMF, figured we can try it and no harm no foul if we decide not to use it.
She wants alternating pink and platinum... what does that mean? The ribbon or the stripes. I was thinking she meant the stripes. I'll get clarification before May, but they are still deciding on flavors and stuff, so I'll wait until they email me with the cake flavor and final decisions on what they want the cake to look like before I ask. But what do you all think? I was thinking pink stripes and platinum ribbon, but she specifically said alternating. So Pink Stripes, Platinum ribbon; platinum stripes, pink ribbon; pink stripes, platinum ribbon... would that look good?
If you are doing fondant ribbons you could color the fondant pink for the pink stripes and alternate with white stripes painted platinum. The best tip I've ever had was from a customer service person at Creative Cutters in Canada. I wanted to know if they had a luster dust that would give me a true shiny silver, like platinum or chrome. She suggested mixing equal parts Nu Silver with Super Pearl Luster dust and thinning with Vodka or Everclear. It works beautifully!
Here is a cake I did with a gumpaste bow in those very colors.
