Hi just bought one of these anyone have a tutorial on how to use it? I know I can use it on fondant but what about buttercream?
I use mine on Buttercream all the time, just let it crust then put it up against the cake and rub your hand on the backside and remove it and voila a pattern is on the buttercream. Enjoy!! The hardest part I find is matching up the pattern towards the back any ideas from others on this?
I have never used mine with fondant - always with buttercream. I wait for my icing to crust and then I dust the mat with cornstarch (because it dissolves and disappears into the icing) and place it up against the cake and then smooth it down with my fondant smoother. I then pull it back carefully, re-dust if I need to and then move it over. I use the diamond, brick, cobblestone and swiss dots the most.
I think most of mine might be the CK brand - not really sure since I didn't keep the packaging. I would think they would all work about the same as long as your buttercream is crusted well and you dust it first (which you probably don't have to do if you wait long enough on the icing - but I always do just in case there is that one little spot that is still sticky).
It's a plastic clear mat, with a embedded design of either a diamond shape, dots to indent to space properly, they have bricks and cobblestones. You mark your icing once it has crusted and on the diamond one (that's the one I use all the time) where the X meets I put a gold or silver dragee. Possibilities are endless. I use mine for the sides of the cakes I make to look like gifts one stacked on the other. If I knew how to download I would put mine here for you to see. Oh and I bought mine at www.cakesbysam.com I hope that's right.........
Yes , I leave some of my goodies in the trunk until he's at work...............hahahahaha What he don't see don't upset him. There are just too many nice tricks of the trade and supplies are endless I'm finding, where to store it is a problem too. I need organization.
i have several of them too... and just found some in the clay department at a craft store... smaller but 5 for $5!!!!!
Darn I should have gotten the swiss dot while I was at it.
it is truly addicting. i tend to HAVE to get all the fun new toys. i now have a shelf, wall, table and roll around craftsman tool chest full of cake stuff! LOL (not to mention my laundry closet is stacked full of pans and boxes!)
Lucky for me I don't have to hide stuff my husband really doesn't care what I buy as long as it's not on the dining room table sitting there and I better be making cakes and I do all that!!!
ok, i am going to start a thread in how do i for orgnazing tools... have a look

ya, my DH is really supportive too... he bought me the craftsman roll around cart! LOL
Genius!!!!! I'm getting one of those too. I can't believe how organized your stuff is! I've 4 or 5 kits, shelfing etc., and I can"t seem to find what I need when I need it. This is a great idea.
Yes, I'm wondering if that would work. I use IMBC and it doesn't crust.
Jacqui
i would be very nervous about using them on something that doesn't crust. sorry.
