I use mine on Buttercream all the time, just let it crust then put it up against the cake and rub your hand on the backside and remove it and voila a pattern is on the buttercream. Enjoy!! The hardest part I find is matching up the pattern towards the back any ideas from others on this?

I have never used mine with fondant - always with buttercream. I wait for my icing to crust and then I dust the mat with cornstarch (because it dissolves and disappears into the icing) and place it up against the cake and then smooth it down with my fondant smoother. I then pull it back carefully, re-dust if I need to and then move it over. I use the diamond, brick, cobblestone and swiss dots the most.

What brands do you guys use? Are there any that you know won't work? Any that work better than others?
Thanks!

I think most of mine might be the CK brand - not really sure since I didn't keep the packaging. I would think they would all work about the same as long as your buttercream is crusted well and you dust it first (which you probably don't have to do if you wait long enough on the icing - but I always do just in case there is that one little spot that is still sticky).

What exactly is this and where do you buy one?

It's a plastic clear mat, with a embedded design of either a diamond shape, dots to indent to space properly, they have bricks and cobblestones. You mark your icing once it has crusted and on the diamond one (that's the one I use all the time) where the X meets I put a gold or silver dragee. Possibilities are endless. I use mine for the sides of the cakes I make to look like gifts one stacked on the other. If I knew how to download I would put mine here for you to see. Oh and I bought mine at www.cakesbysam.com I hope that's right.........

alaskanmom I am drooling at that cabinet!!!!!!!

What a fantastic idea! I have mine in a gazillion plastic containers ranging from little to super huge! While it might be organised it's a pain to have everything separated.

I soooooooooooooo want one

Genius!!!!! I'm getting one of those too. I can't believe how organized your stuff is! I've 4 or 5 kits, shelfing etc., and I can"t seem to find what I need when I need it. This is a great idea.

i have a question on the pattern presses, what if you are working with a buttercream that does not really crust - would you use the cornstarch? Put it in the fridge, let it get a little harder and then use the presser and cornstarch?

Yes, I'm wondering if that would work. I use IMBC and it doesn't crust.

That is an interesting question...I'd love to hear the answer to that.

I will be trying a couple of new icing recipes in the next few weeks, and I want to use the impression mats with them, but I don't know if the icing will crust.

Anyone??
