I'm not sure what you mean when you say your royal icing isn't working for your cutouts, but I'd recommend reading through Antonia74's tutorial on the ARticles page (How to bake & decorate cookies). She has a great recipe for royal for cookies, and also gives detailed steps for how she decorates her beautiful cookies!

For your other cookies, I think there are a couple of recipes floating around here for pumpkin cookies, that sounds like fall! I also especially like oatmeal raisin cookies in the fall, and they're quick and easy to make!

Mmmm yeah oatmeal raisin and pumpkin sounds great! And chocolate chip is always a good standby... Last Christmas I made baskets of decorated cookies on sticks and also took mini chocolate chips and made small chocolate chip cookies on sticks as extra fillers.

Peanut butter cookies would be good too.... or fudge.

I have a chewy oatmeal cookie recipe that you can leave plain or add raisins, dried cherries or cranberries, chocolate chips, and/or nuts to...but it's also good to sandwich two of them together with a marshmallow cream filling...yummy! I also have a very, VERY easy butterscotch pecan sandy recipe that tastes very rich and looks very elegant. PM me if you'd like the recipes.
