I'm attempting a 2 tiered present cake. I plan on using a crusting buttercream with the fondant bow. My question is how do I attach the fondant to the sides of the cake to make it look like a wrapped cake with the fondant "ribbon" coming up the sides and coming together on top to form the bow? Can I cut the strips of fondant and lay it from the top to the bottom of my crusted buttercream while it is still moist. Will it dry okay already being attached to the cake.

Also the bow is going to be black, what color of luster dust do I use to make it shinny? Will the luster dust come off when I try to assemble the bow after it dries?

I hope I made some sense. I'm new to fondant and the luster dusts!

Thanks for any advice

You can do it while it's not crusted, or mist the crusted icing with a very little water to make sheets of fondant stick. Strips can be lightly painted with water and applied as well.

i have one in my photos that was BC with a fondant bow and ribbons. i just put a little piping gel on the back of the strip and attached them from the bottom up. not sure about makiing it shiny, i know you can steam gumpaste to make it shine but i would be afraid of the bow drooping.

You can also use some gumglue to attach the pieces. Shortening can make it shinny also...just use it sparingly.
